Laurel plans major highway realignment

The city of Laurel is getting $2.4 million from MDOT for an ambitious project to connect several major highways.

The city is starting the first stage of a three-stage project, to connect highways 84, 15, and 11.  All three connect near the Teresa Street underpass.

The mayor says the city has hired the engineering firm Neel-Schaffer to do the work.

He says plans are to build an overpass from 5th Street to Chantilly Street.

Officials say this project will complement the newly reconstructed I-59 corridor.

The project will make traffic more efficient and reduce accidents, officials predict.
