Fourth Street project halted; lone bid too high

A major setback Friday for one of Hattiesburg's most travelled roads.

Plans for the Fourth Street expansion have been put on hold as Lamar County supervisors scramble to get the project back up and running.

The board received only one bid for the job to widen Fourth Street, and that bid was 25 percent over estimates. Now supervisors say engineers will have to go back and recheck the calculations.

"We're obviously very disappointed," says Fred Hatten, president of the board. "We were looking forward to getting this project off the ground within the next 30 days or so.  But as we know now, that won't happen."

Supervisors now say they will either have to rebid the project or see if MDOT will increase its level of funding.
