Rankin man found guilty in slaying of retired law officer

Johnny Shorter has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2006 shooting death of a retired law enforcement officer in Brandon.

A Rankin County jury found Shorter guilty Thursday in the death of 63-year-old Kenneth Boutwell, a former Indianola police chief.

Prosecutors argued during the trial that Shorter made his intentions known, telling a lawyer that he planned to commit a murder just an hour before Boutwell was shot twice at his home.

Police said Shorter's estranged wife, Angelique Shorter, was staying at Boutwell's house when the former officer was killed.

Prosecutors said during the three-day trial that it was Boutwell's involvement with Angelique Shorter that led to his death.

Shorter maintained his innocence throughout the trial, but allegedly confessed to police and family members.
