Wayne Countians learn to defend against wildfires

The Mississippi Forestry Commission is working in partnership with many other groups to ensure residents in Wayne County are well protected from wildfires.

The effort is called Fire Wise, and a field day was held at Maynor Creek Water Park in Wayne County today.

Homeowners, elected officials and firefighters were invited to take part in several workshops aimed at teaching them about defensible space around a home. That includes a 30- to 50-foot buffer zone surrounding a home.

Some of the topics this field day touched upon were prescribed burning, herbicide application, and preventing home ignitions.
