Smith Co man jailed for assaulting girlfriend

A 31-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and kidnapping after he allegedly beat his former girlfriend with a baseball bat and stabbed her, Smith County authorities said.

Sheriff Charlie Crumpton said Jonathan Ivy was in the Smith County jail on a $300,000 bond in connection with the weekend attack on Amanda Cruz.

Ivy allegedly beat Cruz in front of their two children and then left her for dead at an abandoned home, authorities said.

Crumpton said Cruz suffered cuts to her throat and the back of her neck as well as stab wounds.

She was treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for a fractured skull and broken fingers. Her injuries required dozens of stitches and staples.

"I've been in law enforcement a very long time, and this was absolutely the worst beating I've ever seen," Crumpton said.

Crumpton said Ivy drove the children to a house near Mize and dropped them off and ran away. He was arrested Monday morning, about seven miles from the home.
