Feds bankrolling Petal creek improvement

Portions of Green's Creek in Petal are being modified to prevent the stream from eroding two public roads.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service is conducting an emergency watershed project to stabilize the creek's banks. Officials say parts of Centre Circle and Rosewood Drive are in danger of washing out if the banks continue to erode.

The project is being fully funded by the USDA.

"So we're very fortunate to get this done," says Petal street supervisor Larry Byrd. "Normally these are like a 75-to-25 percent match.  Because of Katrina we're getting 100 percent funding on these.  It's about $171,000 worth of work getting done."

The project is expected to be completed in about two weeks.
