Woman, 22, charged in Hub shooting

A woman is in stable condition in a hospital after being gunned down at a Hattiesburg apartment complex. The alleged shooter is behind bars.

Shawanda Payton, 22, of Jeff Davis County, was arraigned and charged with aggravated assault. Authorities say Payton shot the victim around 4 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex on Eagle Drive. Officials believe the shooting stemmed from an argument. The victim was wounded three times with a 9mm handgun.

HPD says there's no tolerance for this type of criminal activty.

"I do want the citizens of Hattiesburg to know that we are not going to tolerate this type of senseless violence," says Maj. Hardy Sims, "that we are going to take a zero tolerance on all our gun crimes. So with this arrest hopefully the message will get out, and we will take it to the fullest extent of the law."

Police have not disclosed the identity of the victim.
