Sacred Heart puts $4m into growth

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has announced a major two-pronged construction project that will enlarge its school downtown as well as provide a new worship center for West Hattiesburg.

The $4 million project will add a 4,000-square-foot, 320-seat cafeteria to Sacred Heart School as well as 31 new classrooms that can accommodate 600 students.  The current enrollment is around 400.

Donated property on Highway 589 will be used to construct the St. Fabian Community Center west of Hattiesburg, which will eventually replace St. Thomas Catholic Church across from USM.

Officials say St. Thomas will be converted into a "Newman Center" for a campus ministry.
