Petal blast was bomb squad detonation

School officials say that a loud explosion near Petal Elementary School Thursday was caused by the detonation of two small devices by Camp Shelby's bomb squad.

Officials say the devices were what they called "enhanced firecrackers" brought to school three weeks ago by a middle school student. The student is no longer in school.

In an effort to dispose of the devices, the bomb squad blew up the firecrackers in an area behind the school. We are told Shelby soldiers used a plastic explosive known as C-4 to detonate the devices.
