The Hattiesburg Zoo has come a long way since its official start in the 1950's and soon it could enter into an all new phase of potential growth. Zoo officials hope that in two years they will be nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This means the zoo would be inspected and would have to meet all standards set by the AZA.
The zoo has taken their final big step towards this goal by hiring a new education coordinator which plans to make the zoo more interactive. Marsha Newman a former teacher has already implemented several new programs including classroom visits in an attempt to make the Hattiesburg Zoo more interactive.
If the zoo becomes accredited it will open up a whole new door for funding the zoo. They will have a greater chance of applying for national grants, which could go towards future plans for zoo expansion.
