New Laurel fire chief climbed the ladder

The city of Laurel has a new fire chief. Mayor Melvin Mack promoted David Chance, a 30-year veteran of the department, to succeed the retiring Steve Russell.

Chance, now a battalion chief, says he's delighted.

"Very honored, very humble, very grateful," he says. "Got a big job ahead of me, got some big shoes to fill. I want to continue on as Chief Russell has led in the past. I wish to continue his vision for the future, but I have some visions of my own."

Chance will start as chief Feb. 1.
