'Hard work' kept him going 100 years

A Lamar County man has begun 2007 by reaching a milestone in his life...his 100th birthday.

Randolph "Rand" Bennett was actually born in October of 1906, but today his family and friends officially celebrated his 100th birthday at Midway Baptist Church.

Bennett grew up in Marion County, one of 16 children, but has spent most of his life in the Sumrall area.

He and his late wife, Azzie Cook Bennett, had six children and today he has a total of eleven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Bennett worked in construction and agriculture and was a school bus driver at one time.

When asked about his secret to long life, he said, "...hard work, I guess."
