Race divides Lumberton over chief pick

Lumberton still doesn't have a permanent police chief, after the mayor Thursday night vetoed a decision by the board of aldermen to hire the man now serving as interim chief.
In a special called meeting, the board voted 3 to 2 along racial lines to give the job to interim chief Maurice Hammond.  That decision was immediately vetoed by Mayor Aaron Lott.

Moments earlier, the board had voted 3 to 2, also along racial lines, not to hire Randy Johnson, a retired major with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.

Now the board has 10 days to override the veto.
