State, feds probe inmate abuse claims

The FBI and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations are looking into allegations of prisoner abuse in the Pearl River County jail.

At least six inmates have filed statements with Hancock County judges saying they were beaten by jailers, attacked by other prisoners while guards stood by doing nothing, and received slow medical treatment.

Nearly a dozen others have made similar claims by making court appearances.

Most of the complaints came from prisoners from the Hancock County jail that were moved to Pearl River County because of damage caused by Katrina.

Hancock County is paying Pearl River County $30 a day per inmate to house them.
