Lamar County Fair Raising Money for Firefighters

Lamar County residents are enjoying an old-fashioned fair and helping out their local fire departments at the same time.

A first-ever, Volunteer Firefighters Festival and Fair in Purvis wrapped up today, after three days of family fun at the Lamar County Fairgrounds.

Today's activities included carnival rides, local dancers and displays of firefighting and rescue techniques.

Proceeds from the event benefit volunteer firefighters.

They say the fair is a great way to show residents what they do.

"A lot of people don't realize the fire protection they have and all the services that the fire protection provides, like during the tornado, we had people out there in the woods, searching for people that were hurt," said George Stevens, Fire Coordinator for Lamar County.

"We provide emergency medical service, weather spotting, whenever a tornado warning comes out, we have people out there watching for them," Stevens said.

The event wrapped up tonight with a rodeo and a fireworks display.
