The Democratic candidate who hopes to unseat Mississippi Republican Senator Trent Lott made a campaign stopover in Laurel this morning.
State Representative Erik Fleming of Jackson addressed members of the Baptist Ministerial Alliance and the Jones County Democratic Executive Committee at Calvary Baptist Church.
Fleming says he's continuing to stress issues such as jobs, healthcare and retirement benefits as he campaigns across the state.
And he believes his message is hitting home with voters.
"Those issues seem to be playing well," said Fleming.
"People aren't being distracted by any games that the Republicans are playing now, they understand that the bread and butter issues are the issues that we need to deal with and they believe I'm the man that can handle that job," Fleming said.
