Honors College: 30 years of illumination

The Honors College at Southern Miss is celebrating 30 years. The program, which now has 135 students, takes learning beyond the classroom.

At an event Friday, prospective Honors College students and their parents had an opportunity to learn more about this unique experience.

Students admitted to the program take classes where they have an opportunity to explore the world outside the lecture space. Class sizes are small, enabling students to have quality time with their professors and become more knowledgeable about their subjects.

"It's a unique experience," says Honors College professor Andy Wiest, "because they get to work in very small groups with some of the best professors on campus, and we get to take them out of the classroom and take them to the places where literature happened, like Walden Pond, or in my case where war happened at the Civil War battlefields of Vicksburg."
