It took nearly 60 years, but now the deadly "S" curve in Laurel is about to undergo a makeover.
City and state officials along with community leaders turned out today for a special groundbreaking ceremony. The project will provide the reconstruction and realignment of Interstate 59 in Laurel. The S-curve will be eliminated and the bridge will be widened with new vertical alignments.
MDOT South District Commissioner Wayne Brown says the project has been a team effort that's well past due.
"This project will realign Interstate 59 it will be a safer highway," says Brown, "it will be a quicker highway, it's going to be quite an assets to Laurel and South Mississippi and to all the motorist that use Interstate 59."
Officials say the project will be complete in 2009.
