Ex-coach faces sex charge in Columbia

A Marion County baseball coach charged with having sex with a minor appeared in Columbia justice court on Wednesday.

Steve Harris, who was baseball coach at West Marion High School until he was arrested, faces one count of sexual battery on a minor. Justice Court Judge Wynn Broom set bond at $50,000.

Officials say Harris could still face additional charges.

He's the second Marion County school employee in the past two months to face charges of engaging in a sexual act with a minor. In August, Columbia Elementary School substitute teacher Kinsley Waller was charged with having sex with a child on campus.

County and city school officials say they're doing all they can to protect students from predator employees, with a thorough screening process.
