'Crazy not to invest' in downtown Laurel

Thanks to the GO Zone created by Congress to speed recovery after Katrina, downtown Laurel may be getting a facelift soon.

Under the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act, the federal government will give a 26 percent tax credit to people who purchase and restore historical buildings in the downtown area. And now the state is giving an additional 25 percent tax credit to people looking to bring business downtown.

Some Laurel business owners say this is a perfect time to revitalize downtown.

"We are crazy not to invest in the downtown right now because you got three or four factors that just makes it amazing," says businessman Danny Rasberry. "Tax credits are dollar for dollar. It's an unbelievable deal."

Some business leaders are looking to spruce up downtown by making the area attractive to local artists.
