Helping Gulf Coast turn over a new leaf

A national nonprofit organization has delivered over three million books to the Gulf Coast.

By often using Hattiesburg as a staging ground, First Book has managed to deliver reading material to children, families, libraries, and schools devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This week alone First Book distributed 170,000 volumes.

Many of the books have gone to the Renaissance Village, a giant FEMA park designed for displaced families.

First Book has been delivering literature since right after Katrina, and has a goal to deliver five million books.
