Ka-ching! Hub sales tax revenue soared

Fiscal year 2006 was very generous to the city of Hattiesburg.

Officials say the city set a record by collecting over $24 million in sales tax last year. That is about $6 million more than the city earned in 2005.

City spokesman John Brown says the 35 percent increase is attributed to new stores, increased population, and consumer confidence.

Hattiesburg ranks No.2 in the state for sales tax collections, after Jackson.
