HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg defeated Petal 43-37 to open the 2017 season.
The Tigers would finish 14-1 and win the class 5A South State title. The Panthers went 8-5 and fell in the second round of the class 6A playoffs.
The two schools open their 2018 seasons against each other on Saturday at Hattiesburg High. While there are some new faces on both sides, the coaches expect a similar hard-fought game on Saturday night.
"When you just have a jamboree you really don't know a lot about what they're going to do," said Petal head coach Marcus Boyles. "You look back at last year and kind of look at what [Hattiesburg] did last year offensively and defensively, anticipate that. Really and truly, I think the first two or three games it's more about the Petal Panthers than it is the opponent. I think any coach will tell you that it's really about us."
"Every year, when Hattiesburg and Petal get together, it's going to be a great ball game," said Hattiesburg head coach Tony Vance. "It doesn't matter who they have coming back, who we got coming back. Competitive juices are gonna be flowing. Coach Boyles has his team ready to play and we're going to have ours ready to play."
