HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

School starts soon, which means that under state law, it's also time to make sure that your kids are updated on their vaccinations.

"It applies to private schools, public schools and licensed daycare, but not homeschooled. No, they are exempt from that," said Christy Barnett, regional health officer for the Southern Public Health Region.

Barnett said that most schools require a proof of immunization form upon registration. You can view a list of required immunizations at the Mississippi State Department of Health website

"It's for safety issues to prevent diseases because there are some kids for whatever reason that can't be vaccinated for medical reasons and things like that. It protects them from being exposed to preventable diseases," Barnett said.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, specific vaccinations are also recommended for students entering high school or college.
