HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg Police Department is seeking the public's help after a shooting on June 16. Just after midnight, an officer encountered an unknown black male near the intersection of S. 28th Ave. and McInnis Loop. According to authorities, when the officer exited his vehicle the suspect fled the scene while firing shots at the policeman.

The shooter arrived at the 2400 block of McInnis Loop where he ran to the back of Greenbriar Apartments only to begin firing shots at two other officers. Officials say he escaped into the wooded area behind the apartments. A K-9 unit was brought in to help locate the suspect in the wooded area. However, after being on the scene for five hours, authorities were not successful in locating him.

The suspect was last seen wearing dark pants with a white stripe down the side, a white shirt with sleeves to his elbows and carrying a red backpack.

No injuries were reported in this incident. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.

The Hattiesburg Police encourages anyone with information on the incident or subject to call the department or Metro Crime Stoppers at (601) 582- STOP.
