FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Petal man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Forrest County on Tuesday morning.

According to Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict, the crash happened around 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 49.

Benedict said 23-year-old William James Smith lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a new bridge being built over Walls Creek. Benedict said Smith was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was the only person in the car.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Forrest County Sheriff Department, and Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department all worked the accident.

According to officials, this is the third fatality this year in that area.
