University of Southern Mississippi left fielder Gabe Montenegro was named Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball Wednesday.
Montenegro, who took over lead-off duties atop the Golden Eagles’ batting order a few weeks into the 2018 season, was the 19th USM player to earn freshman honors since 1992 and gave the program a Freshman All-American for a fourth consecutive year, following Taylor Braley (2015), Nick Sandlin (2016) and Matt Wallner (2017).
Montenegro, a Guatemala City, Guatemala, native redshirted in 2017, appeared in all but three of USM’s 62 games, starting 54, and helping the Golden Eagles (44-18) to both Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles. USM also earned a spot in its third consecutive NCAA regional
He hit .295, with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 38 runs batted in and 49 runs scored. Montenegro, who finished with a .393 on-base percentage, had a pair of four-hit games (Southern University, March 20; University of Alabama-Birmingham, May 5) and committed just two errors.
