I-59 back open after hazmat spill in Pearl River Co.

Pearl River County, MS (WDAM) - Southbound lanes of Interstate 59 are back open in Pearl River County after a truck hauling asphalt sealer overturned, spilling the hazardous liquid.

According to a traffic alert from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the rollover crash happened around 8 a.m. on I-59 in Poplarville near the overpass over Highway 26.

Poplarville Police Chief Butch Raby said a passenger vehicle rear-ended the truck, sending it careening off the road. The truck overturned off the roadway and spilled about 400 gallons onto the grass.

Raby said the drivers of the truck and passenger vehicle were taken to Forrest General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Crews with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality spent several hours removing and replacing contaminated soil.

They finished their work and cleared the scene about 3:30 p.m.
