HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Members of a Hattiesburg VFW Post teamed up with cadets from a youth program at Camp Shelby Saturday for a holiday activity to honor veterans.
Members of Post 3036 and cadets from Youth Challenge placed American flags on the graves of veterans at Highland and Roseland Park cemeteries.
It is done each year on the Saturday before Memorial Day.
Participants said it is a tradition they are honored to be a part of.
"We are so proud of what (veterans) did, so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today," said Rickey Hosey, incoming commander of Post 3036. "We do this to honor them and all the other veterans."
"It's very important because they risked their lives to serve us and give us a better life," said Keyon Gayden, a Youth Challenge cadet from Winona, Mississippi.
"It's very important, I'm glad to be out here putting flags down, it makes me feel good," said Kaleb Holmes, another cadet from Jackson, Mississippi.
Participants saluted after each flag was placed next to a grave.
