HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Third-graders from Grace Christian Elementary School in Hattiesburg were rewarded for naming the Hattiesburg Fire Department's newest firetruck on Friday.

Two weeks ago, a challenge was issued to all third-graders at Hattiesburg Public Schools, Scared Heart and Presbyterian Christian School to come up with a name for Engine No. 4. The school with the winning name would be rewarded with a party.

“It is really great to have the opportunity to come out here and interact with the kids,” HFD interim Chief Stephen Mooney said.

The party and the newly named truck, Big Red, was in front of Grace Christian Elementary, where kids got to try on firefighter gear, take turns holding the fire hose, explore the new firetruck and enjoy Popsicles.

"They are our first line of public education," Mooney said. "We go into the schools and we get to talk to them about fire safety, and in turn they go home and teach their parents. So we get to network and spread fire prevention and fire safety so that they can really implement it and the parents and the children get to make safety part of their every day life.”
