JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams was on a flight to Jackson, Mississippi when he helped another passenger who was having a medical emergency.

Dr. Adams tweeted Wednesday that he stepped up when the crew on his flight asked if there was a doctor on board to help the passenger. He says the patient is doing well.

Dr. Adams will be at UMMC in Jackson Thursday to discuss the opioid epidemic and what steps the administration and federal government are taking to address it. He will also be joined by Governor Phil Bryant and a panel of experts.

After his visit to UMMC, Dr. Adams will visit the Harbor House Chemical Dependency Services in Byram to meet with staff who work daily to combat the opioid epidemic and residents of the facility who are there seeking help for addiction.

Earlier this year, Dr. Adams issued a public health advisory encouraging more people to routinely carry the drug naxolone, which can restore normal breathing and save the life of someone during an opioid overdose.
