CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

The families of military personnel who've given their lives in service to the nation were honored with a new monument at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby.

A Gold Star Families Memorial Monument was unveiled Wednesday morning.

Gold Star Families are immediate relatives of members of the Armed Forces who have been killed in combat or in support of military activities.

The monuments were created by the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation.

It was founded by World War Two Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams.

He is one of only six living World War II Medal of Honor recipients and the only living recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The monument was paid for by contributions from donors across Mississippi.

It's the 35th Memorial of its kind in the country and the first in Mississippi.
