Jones County remembers fallen officers in annual ceremony

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - For the first time, all law enforcement agencies in Jones County gathered together for a service to remember fallen officers.

A Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony at Lauren Rogers Museum of Art brought together the Jones County Sheriff's Department, the Laurel Police Department, the Ellisville Police Department, the Sandersville Police Department, the Soso Police Department and officers from Jones County Junior College.

The event remembered all law officers killed in the line of duty.

In particular, it honored the memory of Randy Chancellor, a Jones County deputy killed by a drunk driver in 2001.

During the service, officers and family members placed carnations on a wreath, which was taken to Chancellor's gravesite following the ceremony.
