Purvis Mayor declares Mental Health Month

PURVIS, MS (WDAM) - Purvis Mayor Roger Herrin signed a proclamation Monday declaring May as Mental Health Month for the city.

May is recognized as Mental Health month throughout the nation. Partners of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, the Mississippi State Department of Health, NAMI Mississippi, the Mental health Association of South Mississippi and the Mississippi Public Health Institute are launching the "Think Again" campaign this month.

The South Mississippi State Hospital released the following statement on the campaign:

The campaign urges Mississippians, no matter their background, to think again about mental health and realize it is an essential part of their overall health and wellness. Think Again encourages Mississippians to toss out their preconceived notions about mental health, focusing on the fact that mental health problems are no different than other health problems. It is important for Mississippians to understand how common mental illness is and that there is nothing to be ashamed of for seeking help. It is important to understand that good mental health and good physical health go hand-in-hand. There is strong research that proves proper diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management can help protect your health and wellness – both physically and mentally.

The Think Again campaign is a grassroots outreach effort for adults focusing on the connection between physical health and mental health.
