CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

Families of fallen soldiers will be honored next week at Camp Shelby as a new Gold Star Family monument is unveiled. It will be the first of its kind in Mississippi.

An unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum. The event will include a rifle salute, the playing of Taps and a missing man formation flyover.

"Each monument has a lot of similarities with patriotic images, the flag-raising at Iwo Jima, things like that, but there is one panel that is actually very much focused on Mississippi and the Hattiesburg region as well," said Tommy Lofton, museum director. "I don't want to give away what's on there, I'd rather people come see it for themselves, I think they'll be quite pleased with its tie to Mississippi and its salute to our Mississippi veterans and those who have died in service."

The ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. is free and open to the public.

Injuries midway through the 2017 football season thrust Northeast Jones High School’s Swiss-army-knife-of-a-player, Javier Magee, behind center as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. The experience was, to say the least, unsettling. “It was kind of hard,” said Magee, who is known by his nickname, “Fi Fi,” which for some reason lost in time, is spelled “Fa Fa.”
