USM drops Game 1 against Louisiana Tech

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Southern Miss dropped it's series opener against Louisiana Tech Friday 10-6 at Pete Taylor Park.

Graham Ahlrich got the win for the Bulldogs, giving up one hit and three walks and striking out one in two and one-third innings.

Nick Sandlin got the start for the Golden Eagles. He allowed four runs on two hits in six and one-third innings, striking out eight. Sandlin reached a career milestone, tying Darrell Lindsey for eighth place for single-season strikeouts.

Matthew Guidry, LeeMarcus Boyd and Erick Hoard had two hits apiece to pace USM.

The teams will resume the series at 2 p.m. Saturday.

    Conference USA announced its preseason awards on Monday, and a Southern Miss Golden Eagle was among the honorees. Senior placekicker Parker Shaunfield was named the 2018 C-USA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. Shaunfield converted the first 89 extra-point attempts of his career – which is a USM record. A 2017 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, Shaunfield converted 17-of-20 field goal attempts last season (85 percent).
