Law Enforcement Torch Run brings Flame of Hope through the Pine Belt

PINE BELT (WDAM) - The Special Olympics Mississippi Flame of Hope is making its way through the Pine Belt today. Its final destination is Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, where the 2018 summer games will kick off Saturday.

Each year, law enforcers around Mississippi unite to escort the torch across the state during the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

This year's run started in DeSoto County on May 7. The torch will arrive in Biloxi on Friday.

This weekend, Special Olympics athletes will compete for gold in 18 events. This will be the 32nd consecutive year the event has been held at Keesler.

"This is our signature event of our calendar." said Monica Daniels, Executive Director of Special Olympics Mississippi. "We can't thank the base enough for their continued support of Special Olympics Mississippi."

Special Olympics Mississippi serves more than 4,500 Mississippians with intellectual disabilities with 16 multicounty regions across the state.
