HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Six years ago, on May 7, 2012, Brian Dozier made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins.

The Southern Miss product recorded his first career hit and scored a run in that first appearance.

There have been plenty of more hits in the years since – 864 more to be exact – but Dozier’s hometown of Fulton won’t forget that first one.

“My phone rang and it was Brian Dozier,” said Brian Long, who coached Dozier at Itawamba Agricultural High School. “I thought, ‘What does Brian want?’ He called and he said, ‘Coach, I’m going to the big Show. I wanted to let you know.’ I was so excited. We came home and I think he started on a Tuesday night. The cable company, DirecTV, every household in Fulton got the major league baseball channel after that so they could watch Brian play. It’s a big deal for our community…Walmart’s got [Twins jerseys] out front, I think.”
