HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The National Fire Council (NVFC) hosted a Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment and Retention Workshop at Mack's West Catfish and Seafood restaurant. The Mississippi Fire Academy, Mississippi Volunteer Firefighter Association and several firefighters across the Pine Belt and state came out to learn about retention barriers and recruitment strategies.
Many fire departments throughout the nation are struggling to find a keep volunteers. The National Volunteer Fire Council says it's committed to helping departments deal with recruitment and retention challenges.
Lamar County Fire Coordinator George Stevens says the firefighter population is looking to get more younger people to join the departments.
"We have an aging firefighter population and we need to replace them with younger firefighters like these two firefighters," Stevens said. "We have Drew who is a career firefighter and Rusty's a volunteer firefighter both of them are chiefs and we need more young people joining our ranks."
Stevens says this event was a part of the council's s Make Me A Firefighter campaign.
