BIRMINGHAM, AL (WDAM) - University of Southern Mississippi right-hander Nick Sandlin tossed his second consecutive complete-game shutout as No. 13 University of Southern Mississippi topped the University of Alabama-Birmingham 6-0 Friday night.
Luke Reynolds hit his 11th home run of the season in the first inning at Young Memorial Field to give Sandlin all the support he would need as USM (33-12, 17-4 Conference USA) won for the 10th time in its last 11 games.
Sandlin (7-0) gave up six hits, walked two and struck out nine. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 32 innings pitched.
Reynolds followed a Gabe Montenegro single with a two-run home run to put the Golden Eagles in front of UAB (19-24, 11-11) quickly.
USM added a run in the third inning on singles by Mason Irby and LeeMarcus Boyd an errant pickoff attempt and made it 4-0 in the sixth on a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles capped the scoring with two runs in the ninth inning. Fred Franklin scored on a bad throw trying to get him stealing third base and Bryant Bowen added an RBI single.
UAB starter Tanner Graham (3-6) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five.
