HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Eddie Brescher has spent the past five years as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's golf programs at the University of Southern Miss, including his most recent stint as interim women's golf coach.
Friday afternoon, Brescher was given the reins of the men's golf program.
USM athletic director Jon Gilbert announced in a release from the school that Brescher would succeed long-time coach Jerry Weeks, who retired this spring after 12 years at the helm
"Jerry had been a mentor to our young golfers for over the last decade," Gilbert said in a statement. "We wanted someone to match the leadership as well as have solid teaching credentials, and we were fortunate to already have that person in our program.
"He has served both out men's and women's golf programs well and we look forward to having Eddie lead our men's gold program."
Brescher had worked five seasons as an assistant under Weeks with the men's program and then three seasons with the women's golf program. He was bumped to interim head coach for the women's team in December 2017.
"I came here five years ago with hopes of maybe being here for a long time," Brescher said in a statement. "That day has come. Southern Miss is home to me, just like I tell recruits.
"I am very fortunate, humbled and appreciative to be given the reins to lead the team going forward. We have some good stuff coming up."
Brescher, who lettered in golf and earned both bachelor's and master's degrees at Southeastern Louisiana University, arrived at USM after serving two seasons as men's and women's golf coach at Milsaps College.
Prior to that, he spent two years on the Adams and Hooters golf tours, playing in the qualifying stages of the PGA's "Q" School.
When he returned to amateur play in 2011, Brescher became one of Mississippi's top players. He owns three Mississippi Open championships (2013, 2014, 2017), while also playing on the winning Mississippi Four Ball championship (2017). He was rated the No. 2 golfer in Mississippi from 2013-15 by scratchplayers.org.
Brescher is married to the former Lauren Mayer, and the couple has one son, Bowen, and one daughter, Georgia Rose.
