FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A woman running a daycare out of her Forrest County home was charged with child abuse on Wednesday.

Forrest County Sheriff's Department Investigator John Tryner said Melanie Barnett was taken into custody and charged with aggravated child abuse. Barnett ran an at-home day care from her private residence in the Sunrise community outside of Petal, according to Tryner.

Tryner said the sheriff's department received allegations against Barnett, and the department found probable cause to petition the court for her arrest.

Barnett was not operating as a licensed child care facility.

Barnett will make her initial appearance before a judge on Friday. The investigation is ongoing.

WDAM will continue to follow this story closely and post updates when more information is made available.
