HPD warning public about scammers posing as MS Power workers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Police Department is warning the public of a scam targeting people in the City of Hattiesburg.

According to HPD spokesman Ryan Moore, police have received calls about people posing as Mississippi Power employees and saying customers owe money for a bill. Moore says the scammers are threatening to turn customers' power off if they do not provide them with a credit card number or other financial information.

Authorities say the number that is being used in the scam is a local number and appears to be a person named "Jason" who's calling.

Mississippi Power said it's aware of the ongoing scam, and is urging customers to not give anyone their personal information or banking information.

The company says its employees will never call or visit a customer and request for personal or financial information.

If you have reason for concern, or suspect a problem, you are asked to contact Mississippi to verify I.D. at 1-800-532-5102.
