HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker read a proclamation before members of three Civitan clubs in the Pine Belt Wednesday in recognition of Civitan Awareness Month. The club is known for its support of people with developmental disabilities.

Annually, these clubs worldwide donate millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours toward helping this group of citizens with developmental disabilities

"We help with the special needs kids that don’t get out and are unable to go to special events," said Wayne Taylor, president of the Civitan Club of Lamar County. "We’ve held dances for them, we also do an Easter egg hunt this year, we do Halloween, we did a fall festival for just those kids. That’s the kind of work that we do."

Civitan International was founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama.

“With our work, we are trying to get the special needs children out, get them moving and involving them in things.” Taylor said. “Our goal is to get them out do things for them, get them involved and just help them."

The proclamation hopes to encourage folks in our area to actively support the efforts of this international service organization.
