HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A bus driver for the Hattiesburg Public School District is facing disciplinary action after driving around deployed railroad crossing arms Tuesday afternoon.

"HPSD does not condone this type of unacceptable behavior from our district employees. The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority," read a statement from HPSD.

A WDAM viewer sent us a picture of the bus crossing the railroad tracks on East 7th Street near Main Street while the crossing arms were down.

The viewer said in addition to illegally crossing the tracks, the bus driver also passed several vehicles that were stopped waiting for the crossing arms to raise.

The viewer called the bus driver's actions "reckless."

HPSD officials said no students were on the bus at the time of the incident.

The school district said the driver has been disciplined, and this opportunity will be used to reinforce safety protocols.

According to state law, anyone caught driving through, under or around a closed railroad crossing gate will be charged with a misdemeanor and face up to $500 in fines or 30 days behind bars.
