HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - What started as an argument escalated to an incident involving a baseball bat and shovel and eventually led to gunfire Tuesday evening in Hattiesburg.
Hattiesburg Police Department spokesman Ryan Moore said one person has been charged in connection to the gunfire, and more arrests are possible in the ongoing investigation.
Moore said officers were called to a disturbance involving several people on Katie Avenue around 6 p.m.
According to witness statements, the incident started as an argument and escalated when two pickup trucks blocked the street at Rosa Street and John Street.
Moore said a black Nissan Altima tried to go around the roadblock, and a woman got out of the car carrying a baseball bat.
At the same time, a man got out of one of the trucks and grabbed a shovel from the truck bed. Moore said the man hit the Nissan with the shovel.
Witnesses told police the Nissan drove off, and several gunshots were fired from the car as it sped away. Police reported one of the pickups was hit by a bullet.
Police spotted the Nissan on Shelton Avenue about an hour later and stopped the driver, Moore said. That's where police arrested 20-year-old Lanon Manzie.
Moore said Manzie has been charged with accessory after the fact of aggravated assault.
Anyone with information about the incident or potential suspects is urged to call the police department or Crime Stoppers at 601-582-7867.
