WAYNESBORO, MS (WDAM) -

The Waynesboro Rotary Club held its first Rotary Scholar Athlete Program on Monday night.

A select group of local student athletes from Waynesboro High School and Wayne Academy were honored for their hard work in sports and academics. A few of the students received $500 Joe Johnson Rotary Scholarships.

President Robert Cooley said it's important to be successful on and off the field.

"So, we thought this way we would combine scholastic achievements and athletic achievements so we could have the kind of people that we believe are going to grow up and be the next leaders and award them for their service, their hard work and their teamwork," Cooley said.

The event was held at the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro with Mitch Williams, of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as guest speaker.

Rotary leaders said this program will continue each year.
