Laurel man charged with molestation of relative

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Laurel man was charged with molestation after he was accused of inappropriate behavior with a close relative.

Jonathan Smith, 35, of Laurel, was arrested Saturday and charged with molesting-touching a child for a lustful purpose, according to a Jones County Sheriff's Department news release.

Jones County Sheriff's deputies responded to a Laurel residence in reference to an assault on April 5. A concerned parent was told by the child's bus driver that the child was talking about inappropriate behavior and watching inappropriate material on a cell phone, according to the sheriff's department.

The child told the parents that Smith, a close relative, made the child aware of the material through inappropriate behavior. A forensic interview determined that Smith had an inappropriate relationship with the child, according to the press release.

Smith's bond was set at $10,000.
