HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A bullet proof vest may have saved a Hattiesburg police officer's life Sunday after a standoff with a man reportedly armed with a knife turned physical.
Hattiesburg Police Department spokesman Ryan Moore said the man tried to stab an officer in the chest, but the vest stopped the blade, and the officer was left uninjured.
Moore said it all started when police responded to a report of a man walking through an apartment complex on Cahal Street armed with a knife just before noon.
Officers responding to the scene confronted Johnny Williams, 51, and attempted to deescalate the situation, Moore said.
After an hour-long standoff, Moore said Williams charged an officer and tried to stab them in the chest. Another officer was able to get Williams under control with the help of a stun gun and take him into custody.
Moore said Williams has been charged with aggravated assault. Williams is being held at the Forrest County Jail.
