LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted their 3rd annual Evening with the Stars event.
Organizers say the event is meant to honor those in the city of Laurel that have made an impact on the community.
President Julia Lewis says the organization selects people in the community who exemplify their five point thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
Lewis says they also chose recipients based off of military service, civic involvement and arts and letters.
"It's a great honor for them to be recognized," says Lewis, "because they don't do it for the recognition. It's just what we see in them and the things that they do in the community. With our organization, we do take the time out to recognize people who do great things."
Over 15 people were honored during the event. Among those honored included Estelle's Southern Cuisine and Catering and vice-president for Student Affairs at Jones County Junior College Dr. Samuel Jones.
